The names of some organizations that are in the database will not be highlighted by the extension when that name of the organization appears on a page. You can still get the extension to generate popups for these organizations, however. You just have to use specific naming conventions that the extension does recognize.

Below you will first find a discussion of the different types of circumstances that make the extension ignore certain types of names, then of what conventions are used to make the extension recognize them nonetheless, and finally a list with all the specific organizations and the proper naming conventions. That list is included so that you (and search engines) can always go to this page to find that exact combination of words and generate a popup for an organization you would like to know more about.

This may all sound abstract and cumbersome but as you will see below, it is actually pretty simple and easy to do.

Note that at this time (October 4, 2022) there are still a lot of database entries that need to be corrected so that they follow the conventions discussed on this page.

Commonly used words: Some organizations have very commonly used words as their name. If the extension highlighted those commonly used words wherever they occur it would quickly get annoying.

For example, ARM is a technology company and a World Economic Forum partner organization that is also part of a network of organizations active in the ‘countering disinformation’ industry. But of course ‘arm’ is also a semantically unrelated and very commonly used noun as well as a semantically unrelated and commonly used verb. Another example is ‘path’ which can refer to PATH, the large global nonprofit but also to a ‘trodden track or way’ or a ‘course of action.’ 

So to avoid getting too many distracting false positive highlights the extension ignores organizations whose names exactly match very commonly used words. We made a few exceptions for some key organizations such as Apple and Shell. 

The organizations that the extension now ignores are still in the database however. And you can still get popups for them. Here’s how: Just search for “[name of organization] database”, so for example “arm database”. Be sure to use the quotation marks. That way the extension will detect and highlight them and show you the proper popup. That exact combination of words may not appear anywhere online but a search engine should still find and direct you to the page that you are on now as this combination of words is in the list at the bottom of this page. So just hover over or click on the highlighted words at the bottom and you will get a popup.

Country names: For similar reasons the extension will ignore country names. So if the government of Germany directly or indirectly funds a number of organizations it will be in the database but the extension will not highlight occurrences of ‘germany’ on a page. Either the name of the specific ministry or department will be highlighted or “government of Germany” will be.

If you want to find out which organizations are funded by the government of Germany then select all categories in the menu and do a search for “government of Germany” (don’t forget the quotation marks). The extension will highlight that exact combination of words in the results and create a popup.

Wherever it feels correct to use “the” before the country name “the” is used, so for example: “government of the United States.”

Same name, different country: When there are two or more organizations that have the same name and are in the same category but in different countries, you can type “[name of organization] [country of organization]”—e.g. “demos United Kingdom”— to let the extension detect and highlight the name of the organization and activate the popup.

If you type the name of the organization without the country then the extension will highlight that name on a page but the popup that appears will let you know there are different organizations with the same name and redirect you to this page to select the specific organization from the list at the bottom of the page.

Same departments, different countries, varying names: Different countries also have similar departments or ministries and these may be referred to using the same names. So “ministry of foreign affairs” could refer to the Dutch, Canadian, Czech or any number of countries’ ministries of foreign affairs. When the extension sees ‘ministry of foreign affairs’ on the page it can’t know whose country’s ministry it is. To get a specific country’s ministry of foreign affairs search for “[country name] ministry of foreign affairs” and the extension will detect it and highlight it in the results. So for example “netherlands ministry of foreign affairs” or “Japan ministry of foreign affairs”. If this exact combination of words does not occur online then a search engine will at least see that combination of words on the current page and direct you there.

The same convention is used for departments of the United Nations and the European Union unless these already have “United Nations” or “European Union” in their names. So for example “European Union External Action Service.”

For English speaking countries “department of” rather than “ministry for” is used. So “united states department of education” or “united states department of foreign affairs” although the extension also recognizes “united states department of state” or simply “state department”.

For state and municipal governments the same convention is used using the term “department” rather than “ministry”, e.g. “Idaho Department of Education”.

For embassies this is the convention: “embassy of [country whose embassy it is] in [country where the embassy is located]”. So for example “embassy of Czechia in Ukraine”.

Universities, departments and schools: When referring to a department within a university, this is the convention “[department], [university]”. When referring to a school within a department the convention is “[school], [department], [university]”. When referring to a school that does not belong to a specific department it is “[school], [university]”. When referring to a specific part of a university that is designated by a location name, the convention is: “[university], [location]”, so for example “University of Texas, Arlington”.
